HALF DAY WORKSHOPS

DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR OF ACUTE 3RD AND 4TH DEGREE ANAL SPHINCTER TEARS (HANDS-ON WORKSHOP)

Time: 09:00 - 13:00
Venue: CTICC (MEETING ROOM 1.62)
Convenor: Ranee Thakar and Abdul Sultan

Overview

Obstetric anal sphincter disruption is a major cause of anal incontinence.
There is compelling evidence that clinicians are inadequately trained to recognise and repair the anal injuries. This course is essential for all doctors practising obstetrics and repairing perineal tears but will also be useful to midwives, Labour Ward Managers and Colorectal Surgeons. This workshop will involve didactic lectures and videos on diagnosis of tears and repairs.
Repair technique will be taught using animal tissue.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of the anal sphincter
  • Learn tips and tricks of not missing OASIS
  • Confidently repair anal sphincter injuries
  • Understand the techniques of minimising OASIS
  • Management of subsequent pregnancies
